A Zulu Safari

12th August 2013

On Wednesday, 7 August, five of Durban’s local creatives embarked on a Zulu Safari to Sani Pass. I was lucky enough to be a part of those five, and as we met bright and early for our 7am departure we really had no idea what we were in for.

1st Zulu Safaris is a Durban based tour company which has been running since 1988, and they offer tours ranging from day trips to overnight trips, city tours to adventure tours, even fishing, diving and hunting tours. The owner of 1st Zulu Safaris, Sotiris, was our guide and he really knew his stuff.

So we piled into his 4×4 and head to the gorgeous peaks of Sani Pass. Lauren Wallet (Malva creative brand development and marketing), Nadia vd Mescht (Idea curator, consultant, collaborator and crafter). Lee-Anne Geldenhuys (Hello Pretty SA) and Nicola Ashe (Ask Ashe Blog) were my company for the day, and even though I had never met any of these Durban bloggers/creatives, we really had an enthralling day out.

Anyway, back to the adventure. No fear of heights could combat us as we wound our way through the pass, over rocks and ice, making it to the summit of the pass. All the while being filled in on the history of the landmarks and the areas we passed. At the top of the pass we head through the border into Lesotho for lunch at the highest pub in Africa. Before this lunch break however, Sotiris took us to the homes of the locals. What a humbling experience as we walked amidst the smell of freshly baking mielie bread, watching children dance to the beautiful beat of the music being played outside.

It was freezing, but true to the Sotho culture all the people we met were wrapped in Basotho blankets. This stop was the highlight of the trip for me. 1st Zulu Safaris didn’t just take us on a road trip to get some lunch, they lead us into the lives of the locals and filled our hearts with joy!

Lunch of course was surrounded by the most exquisite view, and as we clicked away at our cameras and Instagramed every picture we could, we were all thinking the same thing… how blessed we were to live in such a beautiful country!

1st Zulu Safaris really went out of their way to organise the perfect day trip, full of laughter, great memories and happy hearts. On the trip home we marvelled at our pictures, of which I know I will certainly hold dear to until my next 1st Zulu Safari. I cannot wait to take a tour around Durban or maybe adventure to the Kamberg to see some bushmen paintings. The options are limitless, which makes this tour company so fantastic.

If you are a local who wants to get more out of this awesome city, or you are planning a trip to South Africa, do yourself a favour and contact Sotiris at 1st Zulu Safaris. You will have the greatest adventure and you will love every minute of it, just as I did.
