Bloggers Love Coffee

30th October 2013

On Saturday a few of us Durban bloggers were invited to an event at Colombo Coffee. The #seedtocup Bloggers Love Coffee morning was a journey through the process a coffee bean takes from seed to cup. We were fascinated by all the facts that came our way and Arno and Dan did a great job informing us about each step through the process.

We were each given 3 cups with different grinds in. I can only remember two, Chepkube and Hacienda Salomon. On smelling each there was a distinct difference in strength but I was not able to smell a flavour yet. That’s when it got more interesting, Arno & Dan poured hot water into each cup at the perfectly timed moment and we had to let the coffee settle.

This whole process, by the way, is called Cupping. In front of each blogger was a bowl of water with cupping spoons inside (these look like soup spoons). We used the spoon to stir through the top layer of coffee and try smell for flavours.

The next step made for much laughter as we de-scummed the top of each glass and were asked to shlurp up a taste of the coffees. It was at this moment that we were told we would be able to identify different flavours. Notes of honey, strawberries and cherry were tasted, some more strong than others.

All in all it was such an insightful morning, filled with interesting facts, a host of creative people, and delicious coffee and snacks to end. Thank you to Megan and the team at Colombo Coffee for hosting the morning, and as you know Factory Cafe is my Top Coffee Shop in Durban so I will being seeing you all again very soon!

If you would be interested in experiencing the cupping process, Colombo are hosting a weekly cupping event every Friday at 3pm. Email [email protected] to book, it is free of charge and open to all.
