The last Saturday of every month locals band together with their freshly picked produce and warm baked goods, meeting at the Hellenic Community Centre in Riverside, Durban.
The Food Market as it is best known is frequented by young and old and on a warm sunny day like today, this market is the place to be.
Paul and I had been looking forward to this market for the past month. We arrived as it was closing last month so we made sure that we were ready to go and planned on grabbing a bite to eat while there.
The market starts at 8am and closes at 1pm. Parking is available inside the community centre if you arrive early, otherwise the roads around the centre have sufficient enough grass banks to park on.
The variety of goods is impressive. From Greek sweet treats to Indian spices, German bakers and Swiss cheeses. You can buy bags filled with freshly grown potatoes, carrots, radishes, herbs and lettuces, as well as buckets of tasty olives, pots of honey and packets of biltong.
There is also a craft aspect to this market where one can buy beautiful smocked dresses, jewellery, books, broaches, beaded goods and wooden chopping boards of all sizes.
There really is something for everyone, kids included. The atmosphere is so welcoming as the band play background music and the waiters walk around making sure your thirst is quenched while you wander around the stalls. Tables and chairs are easy to come buy both inside and outside, so grab yourself a bite to eat and spend the morning with your loved ones at The Food Market.
The next market takes place on the 31st of August.
