Cake Pops

16th January 2013

It was while perusing the Woolworths Taste Magazine that I came across the recipe for Cake Pops. I am going to be bold here and say that this moment changed my life. Well at least it definitely changed my baking life. Cake Pops are quite honestly my new favourite treat to bake. They are so tasty and you don’t have to spend a lot of time in a hot kitchen. No oven required, so you can save on electricity, and you can really craft them to be as unique, creative or fun as you like.

The ingredients for Cake Pops are as follows…

1 Madeira, Vanilla or Chocolate sponge cake (depending on your liking)
1/4 cup low-fat cream cheese (or Mascerpone Cheese if you feel like a huge treat)
Examples of some fun decorating ideas
The decorating options are endless. Here are just a few options you may like to use.
Melted Dark Chocolate
Icing (butter, fondant, glaze)
Food Colouring
Anything to sprinkle on to the Cake Pops (hundreds and thousands, edible glitter etc)
10 kebab skewers, cut in half
So that’s what you need and here is how easy they are to make…

  • Crumble the cake, with your fingers, into a large mixing bowl. This is a great recipe for kids to help with too, as they love getting their hands into the mixture.
  • Add in the cream cheese and mix through thoroughly. If the mixture isn’t holding together add some more cream cheese.
  • Roll the mixture into bite size balls and place on a tray.
  • Insert one skewer into each ball and place in the fridge to harden for at least 30 minutes.

Now for the fun part, decorating! By choice I always go with dipping the Cake Pop balls into melted chocolate. I have tried Top Deck, Milk Chocolate and Dark Chocolate, and rather enjoy having a mix of options. It is so simple!

  • Melt the chocolate over boiling water or in the microwave for 30 seconds.
  • Dip the Cake Pop balls into the melted chocolate and have your sprinkles or edible glitter ready to create magic!
  • Place the decorated Cake Pops in the freezer to set.
  • The same applies if you are using icing.
  • If you choose to use fondant icing then you will just need to keep the Cake Pops in the fridge to avoid your masterpiece melting or the icing going gooey.

So like I said, these are so easy and you really can have a lot of fun making these for kids parties, office treats, kitchen teas or whatever the occasion. I have also recently seen a Cake Pop tray from Yuppiechef which I can imagine makes the whole process a lot easier and less messy.

So have fun, and I would love to see some of the masterpieces so send in your comments 🙂
Happy Cake Pop making!
