Colombo Coffee

17th June 2015

*** Colombo Coffee is now located at Shop 1, 59 Kensington Drive (Adelaide Tambo Drive), Durban North ***

I’m almost positive that if you live in KZN you have had a cup of Colombo Coffee. If you haven’t I urge you, do yourself a favour and head to Colombo Coffee, Duke & Duchess, The Farmer’s Daughter, or Coffee Tree, just to name a few coffee shops around KZN that stock Colombo Coffee. *Click on each of those coffee shops for a link to where they are.

Colombo Coffee is a Durban based coffee company that roasts some of the finest coffee I have drunk over my years of being involved in the coffee industry. Colombo Coffee are passionate about the whole process from bean to cup, sourcing the best quality beans (according to international standards) and ensuring each bean is roasted best for it’s profile.

There is a lot of technical terminology that I am not going to use, and even trying to explain the roasting process won’t do it justice. What you should do is chat to Rowan, head roaster at Colombo Coffee. Rowan is committed to continually improving on their roasting technique. At Colombo Coffee they use a small batch roaster for samples, cupping and experimenting before they roast on mass in their beautiful Probat roaster.

The ethos of Colombo Coffee is to provide exceptional quality and education. Their aim is to take people on a journey, educating them on specialty coffee, and producing exceptionally roasted coffee that will leave them not wanting to drink anything but specialty coffee.

Colombo Coffee offer valuable barista training, coffee appreciation courses and online coffee education. These guys are ahead of the game and are on the front-lines of specialty coffee in South Africa. They roast most days in the factory, producing a number of single origin beans and their signature blends. All these coffees can be bought online HERE. Most of their coffee is roasted at a light to medium roast, getting the best flavour notes from the beans.

Colombo is a great place to visit. With their coffee shop on site you can sit and enjoy a coffee while taking in the smells of freshly roasted coffee. Colombo supply to a number of cafes around the province, as I previously mentioned. If you’re a B&B they also supply 20g packs for guest rooms ensuring your guests are treated to the best coffee during their stay.

For more info check out their website where you can learn more about specialty coffee or contact Rowan on [email protected]. You can also follow them on Facebook.

I am interested in going on a barista course, I am 54, have traveled widely and would like a barista job and own my own coffee shop in the future. I have had some basic training at The Bean Green.

Hi John. I’m sure if you chat to the team at Colombo Coffee (if you’re based in Durban) that they would definitely point you in the right direction of what course to do next. You can email [email protected].
