Paul and I have just returned from a week in the Midlands and we are most definitely feeling rested and rejuvenated. The KZN Midlands is my absolute favourite part of South Africa! I think because it reminds me so much of the English countryside and I am a sucker for old English novels and period dramas (yes I am hooked on Downton Abbey).
Paul is the National Director of Red Frogs, a volunteer organisation that provides support to 15 – 25 year olds in party environments. Every year volunteers gather in Ballito, Umhlanga & Plett to be a fun, sober, positive presence to matric leavers who are ready to celebrate their new found freedom once final exams are over. But you can read more about that here 🙂 It is a busy time of year for us and we always make an effort to get away the week after Red Frogs.
So this year we head to the hills of the Midlands, the Dargle Valley to be precise. I manage the Social Media for a guest house in Dargle and so we spent 4 wonderful days at Lemonwood Cottages. Lemonwood is perfectly situated amongst flourish forest and a bounty of flora and fauna. Every morning we woke up to this view, and with a sigh of joy we just soaked in the restfulness that followed.
Well known to this area is the Midlands Meander. A journey around the KZN Midlands area, populated with restaurants, craft shops, antique treasures, accommodation and culture. We have meandered around the Midlands many times, but each visit is just as new and exciting.
On this trip we visited some old and some new places. The most special stop was at Madiba’s Capture Site & Museum. The amount of people coming to pay their respects was quite moving. Flowers and candles have been strewn around the Madiba sculpture and all day families are walking through the museum while remembering this great man.
Here is a list of some of the places we visited this time, all places we can highly recommend you visit when you next meander around the Midlands.
Cafe Bloom – Nottingham Road
– Best you try their buffet lunches, and their Chocolate Espresso Tart
St Andrews Church – Dargle
– A beautiful old church where one can spend a moment in solace
Il Postino Pizzeria – Dargle
– Best Pizza in the Midlands! Thin crusts and tasty toppings
The Things We Love – Balgowan
– Antique furniture & signs that you will HAVE to be back for
