As I have gotten to know the coffee industry quite well over the years I have taken quite an interest in the barista competitions that happen regularly around the world. I couldn’t imagine the nerves that go into taking part in one of these competitions but I have met some of the SA baristas who have won events and they really do learn a lot from these competitions.
Next week the biggest coffee competition of the year is happening in Italy, the World Barista Champs.
The best baristas from around the world meet from 10 – 12 June to compete in the Barista Championship, the World Brewers Cup, and the World Coffee Roasting Championship.
This year 2 baristas from SA are competing. Craig Charity (SA Barista Champ) from Lineage Coffee is competing in the Barista Championship, and Dan Erasmus (SA Aeropress Champ) from Colombo Coffee is competing the the World Brewers Cup. Go Durban… just saying!
If you want to keep up to date on the competitions follow SCASA on Twitter here.
The World Barista Champs is a great opportunity for baristas to meet, learn and have a good time along the way. I must admit, I would LOVE to be watching live in Italy, but hey, maybe next year.
